Anyway, like I was sayin’, shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey’s uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There’s pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. That- that’s about it. ~Bubba
When Serena showed up last week with twenty dented cans of beans I said “Oh good now we have ninety cans of beans” Every night when dinner time comes around I feel like Bubba from Forrest Gump and dig into my bean locker, we have re-fried beans, red beans, black beans, navy beans, green beans… I think you get the point. I couldn’t possibly be more fed up with beans than I am but every night dinner starts with a can of beans being dumped into the stew pot.
We have been very creative lately and as boring as beans can sound we always find a few scraps to spice it up. A can of black beans, a can of tomatoes, a bit of chicken scraps, green beans from the garden and a few sliced up tortillas and some cheese I found in the bilge that I bought in July and we had a wonderful tortilla soup a pinch of this and that made it gourmet.
Regardless of how basic our meals may seem Chloe is always hopefully waiting for a few scraps of what she is convinced is grade A fillet mignon.
Half an old loaf of bread and a few snatched farm fresh eggs from Serena’s family ranch and we had some of the tastiest french toast I have ever had, a two year old bottle of real maple syrup was icing on the cake.
I love the long dark nights of winter, we hole up for quiet evenings and make and remake plans for the day the winters grip loosens just enough to escape.
Its always warm and cozy on The`, there is plenty of room for all. In twenty one days the winter solstice arrives and if the world doesn’t end spring is right around the corner.
“I have three precious things which I hold fast and prize. The first is gentleness; the second is frugality; the third is humility, which keeps me from putting myself before others. Be gentle and you can be bold; be frugal and you can be liberal; avoid putting yourself before others and you can become a leader among men.”
