I could hear the slow swoosh of snow as my bike tires sliced through it. My fingers were numb and my face pink with the nip in the air. The rhythmic click of Chloe’s claws set the pace for our slow push to the local co-op to find treats for dinner. 20 minutes later I was in the parking lot being berated for torturing my dog and making her be outside in the cold. I smiled and responded that she was the one with the fir coat and that it was me they should be worried about.
I was fat dumb and happy, I drank too much, smoked to much, ate too much. I was slowly killing myself and didn’t even care, actually I didn’t know what I was doing to myself, I was a typical American. That was many years ago, 4 to be exact, exactly 4 years to this day I gave up my car and changed my life forever. It wasn’t just the car I let loose, the car was the first in a domino effect that would give me freedom from stress, betrayal, greed, and the slow painful death Americans cherish so much.
The boiling frog story is a widespread anecdote describing a frog slowly being boiled alive. The premise is that if a frog is placed in boiling water, it will jump out, but if it is placed in cold water that is slowly heated, it will not perceive the danger and will be cooked to death.
I was the frog, long commutes to work to pay for my cell phone, internet, car, house, insurance, heath care, credit cards. I had to heat my house to 75 degrees but for some reason it also had to be cooled to 65. everything was stressful but I didn’t even know why. I ate healthy meals but they were always followed with expensive beer, ice cream, cookies. There was bacon every morning and meat of every kind every day, I couldn’t live without meat. I rode my bike, hiked and ran but never enough to keep up with my lifestyle. I spent every penny I earned, and by the end of every month I was broke. I made many resolutions but never kept them.
I will never forget handing the keys to my car over to the couple who bought it, that was the beginning of the end of everything I knew in life. Now 4 years and 30 pounds lighter I’m a different person, I still smoke but that is next on my list, rather than go cold turkey on everything I have slowly been cutting back on the poison society dangles at our finger tips every step of the way.
If you think that smoking is bad for you but that being on facebook is healthy you are the frog.
If you think that drinking is unhealthy but commute to work everyday, you are the frog.
If you eat healthy but have stress in your life you are the frog.
if you think cell phones give you more time you are the frog.
If you think your car gives you a higher quality of life, you are the frog.
If you work hard but have nothing but debt to show for it you are the frog.
If you love your partner but are not in love with your partner you are the frog.
If you voted for national health care because you don’t care about your health you are the frog.
If you want to know the secret to living a long, happy, healthy life take a lesson from your dog, they call them mans best friend for a reason.
Be fiercely loyal the the ones you love but don’t be afraid to chase the bad ones off your property.
When you greet people do it like you haven’t seen them in years even if its only been days.
Don’t be afraid to nudge up for a pet or ear scratch, we all need touch.
Make full eye contact always, its the best way to say I love you.
Dogs don’t know evil or jealousy or discontent.
Run everywhere don’t walk.
Don’t just drink your water lap it up.
Go full speed till you collapse and then sleep it off.
Play every day no matter how old you are, its not just for puppies.
And last but not least sneak out the back door every now and then to explore your world, you may get into trouble but its worth it.
“If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous he will not bite you. This is the principal difference between a dog and man.”
